California Stepfather Arrested After 4-Year-Old Dies of an Apparent Drug Overdose

Muri Assunção of The New York Daily News wrote:The stepfather of a 4-year-old boy who died from an apparent drug overdose has been arrested in California.

The heartbreaking incident happened last Thursday in Apple Valley, a town in the County of San Bernardino, located some 95 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

The boy, Logan Alan Pittman, was brought to the emergency room of the St. Mary Medical Center on Thursday morning, according to a statement released by the Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

He arrived at the hospital “unconscious and unresponsive,” and was later pronounced dead — even after “life-saving measures [were] performed by medical staff for over an hour,” according to police.

Deputies who were called to the scene learned that “the child had ingested a controlled substance prior to being taken to the hospital.”

An investigation led to an interview with the boy’s stepfather, 31-year-old Anthony Edward Williams.

He was later arrested and booked for child endangerment likely to result in great bodily injury or death.

The boy’s grandmother, Kimberly Kelley, spoke to ABC7 in an emotional interview that aired Wednesday.

She said his mother didn’t get immediate medical attention but instead waited until the next day to call 911.

“By the time he was taken to the hospital, he was unresponsive,” the grandmother said.

Kelley’s son Chad, who was too distraught to give an interview, is the father of the boy. He shared custody of Logan with the boy’s mother, who has not been arrested.

According to the local newspaper Daily Press, Williams posted bail last week and has been released from custody.

The investigation is still ongoing, according to the sheriff’s department.
